ABOUT DESIGNER

Yumi, founder and designer of NROPSTAR, launched the new couture canine company in 2011 from the combination of her boundless love of the fashion industry and of dogs.

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Yumi moved to New York from Tokyo in 1997 to pursue a Masters degree in broadcast management. Realizing her career in advertising wasn’t fulfilling her passion, and after suffering the devastating loss of her mother, she decided to take control of her life and become her own boss. Throughout this trying time, her Maltese, Chaka, was a healing presence and ultimately the driving creative muse behind her NROPSTAR brand.

Chaka wasn’t the only inspiration behind NROPSTAR. To Yumi, fashion is an art form used to liberate and express oneself, and is much more than just a piece of clothing. Designers like Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo, Consuelo Castiglioni, and Franco Moschino have been a constant source of inspiration to her. After surveying the market of dog apparel, Yumi saw an opportunity to create products that were well made, fashion-forward and reflected the panache of the owners.

Core to the concept of the Signature Collection is Yumi’s play on the attraction of opposites. Her line exhibits this premise as her Japanese introverted culture blends with her New York eclectic influence. One of the brand’s attributes is Shijuhatte illustrations (seen as the Japanese rendition of the Kama Sutra), which Yumi has always been fascinated by.  Sexuality is connected to spirituality, and hedonistic imagery is intersected with class. This contrast is what sets NROPSTAR apart and introduces the newest fashion trend for your best friend.
